Electronic cigarettes: the road to combining technology and tobacco

Electronic cigarettes, also known as electronic atomisers, are an alternative to traditional cigarettes that have grown in popularity worldwide in recent years. It uses an electronic heating device to atomise nicotine-containing or non-nicotine-containing liquids into a gas for inhalation, thus simulating the experience of traditional smoking.

Origin and development of e-cigarettes

The concept of e-cigarettes can be traced back to 2003, when it was first proposed and invented by Chinese pharmacist Han Li. As technology advances and people’s health concerns grow, e-cigarettes have developed rapidly around the world, giving rise to multiple brands and different types of products, ranging from simple one-time-use devices to high-end models with replaceable cartridges and freely adjustable power, making the market increasingly diverse.

Components of an e-cigarette
A typical e-cigarette usually consists of the following core components:

Battery part: provides power to heat the atomiser, some devices have voltage regulation function;

Atomiser: heated by a metal wire that quickly converts the tobacco oil into an aerosol;

Smoke oil storage compartment: stores the smoke oil, which can be replaced or disposable;

Tobacco oil: main ingredients include propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), flavourings and optionally nicotine.

Users’ main concerns
Many users choose e-cigarettes based on the following main reasons:

Reduction of cigarette odour and second-hand smoke gas: compared to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes have a lighter odour and evaporate quickly;

Portable devices and convenient use: many e-cigarette products are small and lightweight, and easy to operate;

Variety of flavours and rich experience: from fruit and menthol to coffee flavours, consumers have more choices;

use by some as a smoking cessation aid: although research is inconclusive, some users use e-cigarettes as a way to reduce their cigarette intake.

Scientific and Regulatory Perspectives
There is still much debate about the health effects of e-cigarettes. Some studies suggest that e-cigarettes may be less harmful to health than traditional cigarettes, but others suggest that long-term inhalation of certain tobacco oil components may pose potential risks. Governments and regulators have different attitudes towards e-cigarettes, with some countries imposing strict restrictions and others encouraging them as an alternative to tobacco control.

Summary
The emergence of e-cigarettes has undoubtedly changed the traditional perception of smoking products. As a product of the combination of technology and lifestyle, it is continuing to spark debate around the world. In the future, the role of e-cigarettes may become clearer as more scientific research and sensible regulation advance.
